Last night, at Tzer Ying Temple, Jaokhun Chaiwat Panyabowonrat, accompanied by Phra Tikkhayano, and Phutong Supakorn(Khuba James) shared a dharma talk on “Step towards success with four Iddhipādās” with every one of us.

At the beginning of the talk, Jaokhun guided us through a mindfulness practice by being aware of our bodily movement and going through a body scan in order to bring back our scattering mind.

Four Iddhipādās are four mental qualities that could be developed to bring success not only in our practice but also in every aspect of our life. Those are Chanda, Viriya, Citta, vīmaṃsā.

Chanda means love what you do and put your mind there unconditionally.

Viriya is the Pali word for energy. It indicates the presence of a strong will and it grows gradually by consistent practice over time. Similarly to weight lifting, a progressive overload is always a wiser way of training instead of pushing all the way up to the maximum, which often leads to a quick withdraw. Therefore, maintaining a BALANCE is important.

Citta——do it with intention and full presence of your mind as well as pay attention to the people and surroundings.

The last one, vīmaṃsā, could be interpreted as understanding and doing by reflections. This is how you could learn from your failure and slowly get skilful at that you do.

Following the talk on Iddhipādās, Chaiwat shared with us the factors necessary to be lucky in our life. Those are : money, a job, a good health, time and opportunity to conduct wholesome deeds. And indeed, we are very lucky to have this opportunity to grow in the Triple Gems, the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha in this life and this is something we all feel grateful for.

This event is organized in collaboration with Tzer Ying Temple, Buddhist Missionary Society Malaysia, Aloka Foundation and Santavana Forest Hermitage. A huge gratitude to all the organizers and volunteers, etc. and people who attended the talk last night, for being willing to contribute your time, energy and kindness. We would like to share the joy and merit around and may all sentient beings get lucky and be able to gradually step towards success in their lives.
