OBJECTIVES
Santavana Forest Hermitage has grown through the years since it was founded in 1998. The main objectives of the organisation are:
1. To practise the Buddha’s teaching and to uphold the spirit of the Buddha-dhamma.
2. To carry out Sangha education and to implement the spirit of the six unities.
3. To enhance co-operation between Sangha and laity and to support the Triple Gem in accordance with the Dhamma.
4. To teach Buddhism as an active, contemporary way of living in order to purify society and mankind.
The first two objectives emphasize theories and discipline of Buddhism, while the later two are specific manifestation of the Triple Gem in Santavana. They are further explained in the following two aspects:
I. Internal Development
1. To practise the Buddha’s teaching and to uphold the spirit of the Buddha-dhamma.
2. To carry out Sangha education and to implement the spirit of the six unities.
The theories are common for monastic and laypersons, while the discipline training only applies to the ordained disciples. Santavana provides education with equal emphasis on theories and practices, and advocates both Svaka and Bodhisattas paths.
For theoretical studies, Santavana adopts a broad perspective on the Buddha’s teachings, aiming to seek the commonalities between Mahāyāna, Theravāda and Tibetan traditions and discover the true spirit of the Buddha’s teaching.
Theories constitute Right View, and the Right View is the basis for behaviour action of cultivating virtue and practising meditation. Practitioners are encouraged to learn pragmatically in accordance to the stages of theory learning (pariyatti), practices (patipatti) and realisation (pativedha). By turning theories into experiences, the “living heritage” will be handed down (to disciples) leading all beings towards true happiness.
II. Reaching Out
3. To enhance co-operation between Sangha and laity and to support the Triple Gem in accordance with the Dhamma.
4. To teach Buddhism as an active, contemporary way of living in order to purify society and mankind.
With good understandings of the teachings, the monastic shall work with laypersons to carry out programs on reaching out and personal cultivation. By mean of serving the Triple Gem in accordance with the Dhamma and Vinaya so as to perpetuate the Buddha’s teachings.
Santavana emphasizes Buddhist ethics between the monastic and laypersons. By working together, both assemblies learn to collaborate with each other and grow to be more resourceful. Voluntary work must be founded on the principle “to practise in accordance with the Dhamma”; the internal faith must be fortified so the volunteers would not draw back from the work due to frustration.
Santavana hosts three major events annually: New Year Reunion, Wesak Celebration, and End-of-Vassa Offerings. These events, on one hand, reaching out to new comers, and on the other hand, allowing senior members to experience serving the Vassa. Santavana also offers courses and activities on a regular basis, such as Dhamma courses, study group, meditation, teacher training, Vassa Courses, children class, etc.
The Education Center, inaugurated during the 20th anniversary of Santavana, is a versatile premise located downtown. A wide range of activities will be held here, such as Dhamma courses, group practices, beginners meditation, calligraphy, and tea making. These activities advocate contemporary Buddhism aiming to purify the mind of beings.
TO SUPPORT
Santavana has been dedicated to promoting Buddha’s teaching, meditation, and cultural activities for years. These mind-purifying courses and activities would never be carried out without financial supports from the public. Continuous support is much needed and appreciated, however small.

宗 旨
寂静禅林从1998年开山以来，已历经二十年的成长岁月了。寂静禅林具有四大宗旨：
一、实践佛陀教诲，延续佛法慧命。
二、重视僧伽教育，落实六和精神。
三、促进僧信互动，依法护持三宝。
四、发扬人间佛教，净化社会人心。
以下将以此四大宗旨来分别介绍寂静禅林，简单以内外来区分其特色：
（一） 崇 内
一、实践佛陀教诲，延续佛法慧命。
二、重视僧伽教育，落实六和精神。
前两项可以说就是佛法的教理和教制，教理是通于在家出家的，而教制则限于出家的律制精神。寂静禅林提倡解行并重的教育，而且是「声闻与菩萨道」并弘的道场。
于解门上，所学习的经论不限于南北藏传其中一个传承，而是采取异中求同的心态去掌握其共同点，探索佛陀的本怀及中心思想。依于解门上所建立的正知见，再进一步在行门上修习福业和止观。依循「教理」 （pariyatti）、「实践」（patipatti）及「证得」（pativedha）的修学次第而脚踏实地学习，把理论转换成经验，使「活的传承」相续流传于世间，让众生都能朝向离苦得乐的菩提大道。
（二） 护 外
三、促进僧信互动，依法护持三宝。
四、发扬人间佛教，净化社会人心。
后两项可说是道场中三宝的具体表现。建立了佛法的解行知见，就须从僧信的互动与协议中，去举办各类接引或静修的活动，依法依律来护持三宝而令正法久住。
寂静禅林多年来皆在僧信伦理教育上着墨甚多，相信僧信七众共同修习，借事链心，一定有更好的处事伦理及应变能力。在发心护持时，要法随法行，一起巩固内在的宗教力量，才不会遇上挫折而退失信心。
寂静禅林每年都会举办「新春大团拜、佛陀日浴佛、解夏供僧日」三大活动，目的在接引新学入门，也让久学有护法的体验。另外，例常活动有：佛法班、读书会、师资培训、安居课程、儿童班等。
在寂静禅林二十周年庆落成的教育中心，座落在市区，具备多功能用途，如可开设佛法课程、共修分享、初阶禅修、书画茶艺等文化活动，借此推广正法，发扬人间佛教及净化社会人心的效用。
护 持
寂静禅林这多年来推展佛陀教法、止观禅修及文化课程等，都需要大众在财力的护持。
