Santavana Forest Hermitage organized an English Dharma talk on Friday, 1 September 2017. The title of the talk was ” Buddhist Approach To The Happiness” conducted by Bhante B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Maha Thera.  A total of 45 participants attended the talk.

        Bhante highlighted diverse happiness level in each stages of people like a child, young people, married people and elderly by giving examples on it. Due to the advancement of technology, we are facing loss of culture, deterioration of face to face communication skills and immoral cases occurred. Bhante also highlighted about the sicknesses of the mind namely anger, hatred, envy, jealousy and others can deteriorate a person’s well being. 

        Therefore, Bhante elaborated  on types of activities needed to achieve happiness with proper knowledge of the Dharma teachings and a peaceful mind. The essential keys are simplified as “do activities that you want other people to do to yourself that can benefit both parties and not harm others”. The most important matter is to not regret one’s action in the later period of time.

        Furthermore, Bhante also differentiated several types of happiness. There are physical happiness with good physical and mental health, social happiness when accompanied by “healthy” friends, spiritual happiness and comfort happiness when one conduct much merit duties in life.

        Bhante also outlined that  we must apply analytical approach whereby reading to gain more knowledge that will support our meditation. Besides that, doing goodness (merits) is a wonderful therapy, which will help mental development to carry on to the next life. Bhante gave a good example of having a “Merit Account Book” to note down the merits that we have conducted. This is a good way to reflect and connect to the past event. Happiness will come to us in such a way when we recount back all those meaningful events.
