4th September 2017, Santavana Centre, Kepayan Ridge; attended by 5 monastics and 50 lay persons.

Bhante Punnaji aged 85+ from Sri Lanka has researched the original teachings of the Buddha since the age of 5.  In his talk he emphasised the importance of understanding the original teachings of the Buddha and, the original meaning of the words that the Buddha used, in the proper way.  Sīla is behaviour.  When emotions (taṇhā) colour the mind, there will be bad thoughts leading to irrational behaviour.

On the other hand, calm and tranquillity (samādhi) condition us to think properly and rationally (paññā) leading to right, rational and intelligent behaviour (sīla).  When we learn to control our emotions and replace bad thoughts with good thoughts, good behaviour will be cultivated.

We can act in a different way from the emotion due to willpower (cetanā) that decides good or bad kamma.  Bhante also emphasised the need to understand how things happen due to the presence of conditions, and not done by a self – this is dependent origination (paticcasamuppāda).

Bhante compassionately answered questions from the audience about temperament, meditation,  nature of mind, freedom from emotions (ceto vimutti) and watching the thoughts.  We were indeed priviledged to listen to the Buddha-Dhamma from Bhante Punnaji.
